2010 Memorial Cup

The 2010 Memorial Cup Tournament is over and it was an exciting tournament. The 2010 Memorial Cup Tournament was the 92nd anniversary of the Memorial Cup. In junior ice hockey, the Memorial Cup is the top championship trophy awarded annually to the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) champion. Numerous current and past NHL stars have played in the Memorial Cup tournament.

The Memorial Cup is awarded following a four-team, round robin tournament. The city that host the tournament is automatically given a birth in the tournament, (2010 the tournament was hosted in Brandon, Manitoba, so the Brandon Wheat Kings are given a automatic birth in the tournament.) The three other teams in the tournament are the champions of the CHL member leagues, which are, the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) and Western Hockey League (WHL).

Sixty teams are eligible to compete in the Memorial Cup Tournament. These sixty teams represent nine provinces and five American states.

The Memorial Cup trophy has a rich history like most other North American hockey trophies. The Memorial Cup was originally known as the OHA Memorial Cup and was donated by the Ontario Hockey Association (OHA) in 1919 to be awarded to the junior champion of Canada.

Since 1971, the Memorial Cup was open to all Junior A teams in the country and was awarded following a series of league, provincial and regional playoffs culminating in an east-west championship. The three-league tournament format began in 1972 when the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association divided the Junior A rank into two tiers, naming the Memorial Cup as the championship of the Major Junior level.

The Memorial Cup was proposed by Captain James T. Sutherland during World War I, who wanted to create a trophy as a memorial to remember the OHA's players who died during the war. When the trophy was created, it was dedicated in honor of the soldiers who died fighting for Canada in the war. During the 2010 tournament, it will be rededicated to honor all soldiers who died fighting for Canada in any conflict.

The Memorial Cup tournament has numerous awards that are given out at the end of the tournament.

The Stafford Smythe Memorial Trophy is given out to the MVP of the Memorial Cup Tournament. The George Parsons Trophy is awarded to the player who is the most sportsmanlike. It has been awarded since 1973.

The best goalie in the Memorial Cup tournament is awarded the Haps Emms Memorial Trophy. The leading scorer of the tournament is awarded the Ed Chynoweth Trophy.
