History of IIHF

Thanks to IIHF.com for the IIHF logo.

The history of IIHF, (International Ice Hockey Federation) traces back to May 15, 1908 when the IIHF was created in Paris, France, as Ligue International de Hockey sur Glace (LIHG).

The founding document was signed by representatives from Belgium, France, Great Britain, Switzerland and Czechoslovakia. Click here to see the original founding document of the IIHF (LIHG) that was signed on May 15, 1908. Louis Magnus, who was a French representative who also signed the founding document became the First President of the IIHF. The current president of the IIHF is Rene Fasel, who is of Swiss nationality. He was elected President in 1994 and still holds office. He is the

Today the IIHF is the worldwide governing body for ice hockey and in-line hockey. The IIHF is based in Zurich, Switzerland, where it has 68 members.

Some of the responsibilities that the IIHF has are the management of international ice hockey tournaments as well as maintaining the IIHF World Ranking.

The IIHF main function is to govern, develop and organize hockey throughout the world. It also has the responsibility to promote friendly relations among the member national associations and to operate in an organized manner.

Another purpose of the federation is to provide aid in the young players' development and in the development of coaches and game officials. The IIHF holds annual tournaments for younger players and teams such as the IIHF U18 World Championship and the IIHF World Junior Championship. The IIHF is also the governing body that presides over ice hockey in the Olympic Games as well as over all levels of the IIHF World Championships.

The IIHF also organizes several European club competitions such as the Champion Hockey League (which replaced the European Champions Cup) and Continental Cup which is tournament for European club teams. There have been other tournaments in the history of IIHF. The IIHF held the European Champions Cup and the IIHF Super Cup, both of which are no longer held.

In 2008 to celebrate the IIHF 100 anniversary, the IIHF launched a new annual club competition called the Victoria Cup. The Victoria Cup is an annual game or series of games played between professional ice hockey teams from Europe and the NHL.

The idea was to have a game every year, where the Champions Hockey League winner and one team from the National Hockey League play for the IIHF-run Victoria Cup. The IIHF has mentioned it would like the NHL team to be that years Stanley Cup Champion, but the NHL hasn't agreed to that yet.

Since there is no Champions Hockey League in 2010, a team from one of the top 4 European league will be picked. The games are usually held during late September or early October when the NHL sends a couple teams to Europe to open the season. The New York Rangers and represented the NHL in 2008 while the Chicago Blackhawks represented the NHL in 2009.

Even though the IIHF has worldwide authority, it has very little control of hockey in North America and over the NHL.

The IIHF base power basically lies in Europe with the respective national governing bodies and leagues. In North America, Canada has Hockey Canada and the United States has USA Hockey. So the United States and Canada follow their own rulebooks.

In 1998, the IIHF museum was relocated to Toronto, Ontario, where it currently occupies over 3,500 sq feet within the Hockey Hall of Fame.

The history of IIHF is filled with countless amazing hockey moments and stories. So the IIHF put out a book in 2008 called the "IIHF Top 100 Hockey Stories of All-Time" to celebrate the IIHF 100th Anniversary. The IIHF voted the 1980 USA Olympic Hockey "Miracle on Ice" game as the greatest International Hockey story of the last 100 years (1908-2008). Thanks to Amazon.ca for the picture.

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the IIHF, the 2008 IIHF World Championships were held in Canada. Russia won the 2008 IIHF World Championship and repeated again as Champions at the 2009 IIHF World Championships in Switzerland. The 2010 IIHF World Championships will be held in Germany in May 2010.
