The Miracle movie is a 2004 Disney biographical movie about the 1980 U.S. men's hockey team that won the gold medal in the 1980 Winter Olympics. The movie starred Kurt Russell as Herb Brooks. It was written by Eric Guggenheim and directed by Gavin O'Connor. "Miracle" was a commercial and critical success. It earned $19,377,577 its opening weekend and ended its theater run with a total gross of $64,445,708. It is on many critics and sports journalist list of best sports movies ever made. In 2004, it won best sports movie at the ESPY awards. "Miracle" was the second movie made based on the 1980 U.S. Olympic team, the first being a made for TV movie in 1981.
The Miracle movie is great, regardless if you love sports or even hockey. Why is it a great movie? I believe for two reasons. First, it makes you proud to be an American. The 1980 U.S. Olympic Team brought back the American spirit when the country needed it the most, they united a country. This team is the perfect representation of what America is all about. Hard work, sacrifice, believing in yourself, and community. The players on the U.S. team at first were bitter rivals and did not like each other. But Herb Brooks made them put aside their differences and come together as a team to achieve the impossible.
Secondly, this movie inspires you to reach for your own dreams and to never stop believing in the impossible. A great example is that the 2004 Boston Red Sox watched the movie in their clubhouse before Game 7 of the 2004 American League Championship series against the New York Yankees. The movie inspired them to pull off the greatest comeback in baseball history by beating the New York Yankees 10-3 in Game 7, thus winning the series 4-3 after they were down 3-0 in the series. They would go on and win the 2004 World Series.
I love this movie! It is one of my top 10 favorite movies ever. It is also one of the very few movies that makes me cry every time I watch it.

The production of the movie is filled with some interesting facts and trivia. For example, broadcasting legend Al Michaels rerecorded most of the play-by-play he had called during the "Miracle on Ice" game for the film. However the final seconds, featuring the famous "Do you believe in miracles?" call from the actual game, was preserved and edited into the film because director Gavin O'Connor felt that he couldn't ask Al Michaels to recreate the emotion he experienced at that moment.
Another interesting fact is that over 4,000 men auditioned for only 20 roles on the U.S. Olympic team. Also the film was shot in Canada, so most of the crowd in the stands are actually Canadians, not Americans.
The Miracle movie is dedicated to Herb Brooks, who was killed in a car crash six months before the film was released. At the end of the film, the dedication says "He never saw it. He lived it."
Former NHL goalie Bill Ranford who won the Stanley Cup & the Conn Smythe Trophy with the Edmonton Oilers was a stand-in goalie for the character of Jim Craig during the on-ice scenes.
